Founded in 1991 amongst the rolling hills and vineyards of Australia’s famous Barossa Valley, Heinrich Cooperage maintains its philosophy of producing premium quality American oak barrels.
Year after year, it is our passion and promise to deliver top quality barrels that complement your wine style. Creating a premium barrel demands expertise, precision, consistency and repeatability for every specification and every flavour.
Our team uses proprietary technology involving the most advanced systems available to ensure each barrel we craft will meet our high standards.
The Heinrich Story
Our portfolio is the culmination of many years spent working with American oak and exploring the spectrum of flavours it can impart. Our Heinrich Cooperage sales team boasts over 50 years of cooperage and winemaking experience, providing consultative advice on the most appropriate barrel for the wine style each client is seeking.
Our barrels begin with a consistent, premium wood source. As such, we source American oak exclusively from our own stave mill in New Florence, Missouri.
Staves are milled on-site and then undergo natural, open-air seasoning for a minimum of two to three years, benefiting from consistent micro-flora and ideal climatic conditions for aging. Vertical integration ensures consistent quality oak that can easily be traced to its source – and guaranteed for years to come.
Grain tightness is a major contributor to texture, flavour and tannin integration. Our technology measures grain tightness by counting the growth rings per centimeter (GPC) of every stave. This optical selection enables us to guarantee each barrel falls within the established parameters for each grain type: a minimum 3.94 GPC for Fine Grain and 5.91 GPC for our Signature (Extra Fine Grain) barrels.
All Heinrich barrels must be toasted within 95 percent of the theoretical toasting curve. Accuracy is measured by verifying the actual temperature is within 5˚C of the target temperature throughout the toast.
